My Multitasking Miracle – Argan Oil

I know, I know! This isn’t the most exciting comeback post after 6 long months but seriously – hear me out!

Over the past few months I’ve been struggling with my skin. It’s been really dry, lacking radiance and just overall “blah”. Now I know I can probably attribute most of this to cold winter air and dry indoor heating but even as we’ve started to warm up here in BC I’ve still had these issues. So, over the past little while I’ve conducted a little experiment (and if you know me at all this was really  tough to stick to! You’ll soon understand why.) which consisted of using only, yes I mean only, pure Argan Oil on my skin as my moisturizer and treatment. Now you have to understand I am a skin care junkie, I’m obsessed with anything that’s going to “purify”, “hydrate”, “tighten”, “shrink”, “banish” and “brighten”. You name it, I own it and have tested it, so to go from that (sometimes 6-7 products a day!) to only using a single product  ingredient was next to impossible – but inevitably, I did it!

I tested two oils throughout this time, Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil and Julep Elixir. The reason I chose these two was they both have the same ingredient (pure Argan Oil) but they price is vastly different! I wanted to test to see if there was a difference in quality between the two.

Argan Oil is a very light, plant based oil which is high in Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It is said to absorb easily, hydrate and repair as well as provide anti-aging benefits. It can be used all over your body (including hair) and has the ability to be used as a daily moisturizer, an anti-aging treatment, a spilt end treatment, and to soften cuticles. It even claims to help with skin conditions such as acne & is gentle enough to use on even the most sensitive skin.

Now you’re probably thinking, “All that? From one ingredient? Uh, no.”, at least that’s what I was thinking. There has always been that one “it” ingredient that comes and goes over the years. Recently, it seems to have been Argan Oil. I didn’t buy into the hype right away. Like a lot of you I was afraid to put an oil on my skin, believing the old myth that oil causes breakouts and quite frankly, I didn’t think it would do much. But, after receiving two bottles of  Julep Elixir in different maven boxes I decided I should probably at least try it as I was getting quite a collection. Here’s my experience.

I did a true test on this, nothing else except cleanser for one whole week (that’s actually a long time haha)! I would wash my face, add some Argan Oil and that was that. I used it on my eyes, lips, face, hair, hands, you name it. After the first week I was pretty amazed at what I saw. My skin looked so luminous, hydrated and plumped with absolutely no sign of breakouts. I decided that was great and my test was over – back to the tremendous amounts of testing! After going back to my “regular routine” of new products every two days, I noticed my skin was looking dehydrated, sallow and dull again. I was using exfoliants, hydrators, masks and all that but it wasn’t giving my skin the same glow and “youth” that the Argan Oil provided me. I added my Argan Oil back into my routine and there it was again, that glow!

I’m not sure I can go back to not using this (good thing I have a large supply). But there was something I will warn you against. Julep Elixir sells for $24.00/ounce ($19.50 Maven Price) and Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil sells for $48.00/1.7ounce. To me, that’s a pretty hefty differnce, especially since Julep has free shipping and you can often “add on” to your maven box for an even further discounted price. I actually preferred the Julep Elixir texture to Josie Maran Pure Argan Oil as well, making Julep Elixir my clear winner!
