I was late on the L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow train. Like, really late. I just picked these up last week (I know, I know) and I don’t even have a good reason why I didn’t do it sooner. I spotted these while waiting for a prescription at Superstore and wanted them. Noticed they were on the 50% off rack. Wanted them more. Noticed the original price was only $5.49. Was pretty much sold. Noticed they were all matte. DING DING DING! In my hands they were.
That actually was one of the reasons I hesitated to pick them up. I find really shimmery shadows to be overwhelming and I’m likely to end up with more on my cheeks than eyes, and most of the L’Oreal Infallible Shadows are on the good side of shimmery. I hadn’t even realized they made them in matte colours (probably a limited edition) until I spotted them on the sale rack. In this case we are going to use the word “Matte” loosely though, because these aren’t traditionally matte.
To my luck they had 3 left, all in different shades. That never happens at a 50% off sale, you know what I’m talking about. I picked up Enigmatic Purple, Smokey Green and Ultimate Black. I’m really into greens right now for fall and this is an amazing shade, purple works well with my green eyes and you can never have too many black eyeshadows!
So, as I’m sure you all know, these shadows are different in many ways from traditional shadows. First, even though they look solid, they are actually pressed down loose powders. Kind of ingenious. Next, they stay on for a predicted 24 hours. I’m not entirely sure who they are marketing to with this claim but I for one don’t wear my shadow for 24 hours, if it lasts 4 I’m happy. As I said, these are “Matte” shadows. “Matte”. Enigmatic Purple, shown above, is a gorgeous smokey eggplant shade. You can see the subtle shimmer laced throughout but it still gives off a matte effect, just with more dimension. If it were a MAC shadow I would classify it as a Satin. This is the only one of the three that swatches lighter than it appears in the pot.
Next up is Smokey Green. This will be my go-to for the fall I can assure you! It’s sort of an olive green in the pot but once applied looks much darker and more smokey with a subtle flash of green. Again, more of a satin finish than a traditional matte, but gorgeous nonetheless!
I would classify Ultimate Black as more of a charcoal with a bit of a golden undertone. It looks amazing swatched and I’m glad it isn’t just a basic matte black like MAC Carbon. This one has a little more going on and layered over a black liner, it gives it a little something extra!
These are the swatches in natural light. They are obviously all smokey shades and all great for fall so they were a great find!
I honestly love the finish of these! Not too matte, not too shimmery and super versatile. You can wear them as a smokey eye, a lighter wash over the lid or as liner. I’m really glad I picked these up (even if I was super late and almost missed them all together). Do you have any of the L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadows? What are your favourite shades?
